A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, weakened, or aesthetically compromised tooth. Crowns restore the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance while protecting it from further damage.

This treatment is ideal if you

  • Teeth that are cracked, chipped or heavily decayed
  • Teeth that have had root canal treatment
  • Severely worn, discoloured or misshapen teeth
  • Supporting a dental bridge or covering a dental implant

How it works

01

Assessment

We examine the tooth, take any necessary X-rays, and discuss whether a crown is the right option for your situation and what material would suit you best.

02

Preparation and impressions

The tooth is shaped to allow the crown to fit precisely over it. We take detailed impressions and fit a temporary crown to protect the tooth while yours is crafted.

03

Custom fabrication

Your crown is made in a specialist dental laboratory to exact specifications, carefully matched to the shade, shape and size of your natural teeth.

04

Final fitting

At your second appointment we remove the temporary, check the fit and aesthetics of your new crown, and bond it permanently in place.

When You Might Need a Crown

Crowns are recommended for teeth that are severely decayed, cracked or broken, weakened after root canal treatment, heavily filled, misshapen or discoloured, or supporting a dental bridge. They're also used to cover dental implants.

Crown Materials

We offer several high-quality crown materials: all-ceramic or porcelain crowns for the most natural appearance, zirconia crowns for exceptional strength and aesthetics, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns for a combination of strength and appearance. We'll help you choose the best option for your needs.

The Crown Process

Getting a crown typically requires two appointments. At the first visit, we prepare the tooth, take detailed impressions, and fit a temporary crown. At your second appointment (usually 2-3 weeks later), we remove the temporary and cement your permanent custom crown.

Caring for Your Crown

With proper care, crowns can last 15 years or more. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing around your crown just as you would your natural teeth. Avoid biting very hard objects, and attend regular check-ups so we can monitor your crown's condition.

Common questions

How long does getting a crown take?+
Getting a crown typically requires two appointments, usually 1-2 weeks apart. The first is for preparation and impressions; the second is for fitting your finished crown.
Will it look natural?+
Yes. Modern ceramic and porcelain crowns are carefully shade-matched to your surrounding teeth and look completely natural. Most people cannot tell a crown from a real tooth.
Is the procedure painful?+
The preparation is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the tooth and surrounding area will be numb throughout. You may have some mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards, which settles quickly.
How should I care for my crown?+
Exactly as you would a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss around it, and attend regular check-ups. Avoiding biting very hard objects will help it last longer.
