  • Replacing old silver amalgam fillings
  • Areas of sensitivity caused by surface wear

How it works

01

Examination and diagnosis

We identify areas of decay or damage, often with the help of X-rays, and confirm that a filling is the appropriate treatment for your tooth.

02

Removal of decay

Under local anaesthetic, we remove the decayed or damaged tissue, leaving a clean, healthy surface ready for restoration.

03

Bonding the filling

We apply composite resin in layers, hardening each with a curing light, building up the filling to the correct shape and contour of your natural tooth.

04

Finish and polish

The filling is checked against your bite, adjusted if needed, and polished to blend seamlessly with your surrounding tooth structure.

Why Choose Composite Fillings?

Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings match the colour of your natural teeth, making them virtually invisible. They also bond directly to the tooth structure, providing additional strength and requiring less removal of healthy tooth tissue.

When You Need a Filling

Fillings are needed when a tooth has a cavity (decay), a small chip or fracture, worn areas from grinding, or old fillings that need replacing. The earlier we treat decay, the smaller the filling needed and the more tooth structure we can preserve.

The Filling Procedure

After numbing the area for your comfort, we remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth. The composite material is then applied in layers, shaped to match your tooth's contours, and hardened with a special curing light. We then polish the filling for a smooth, natural finish.

Longevity and Care

With proper care, composite fillings can last many years. Maintain good oral hygiene, attend regular check-ups, and avoid excessive force on filled teeth. We'll monitor your fillings at each visit to ensure they remain in good condition.

Common questions

What's the difference between white and silver fillings?+
White (composite) fillings match the colour of your tooth and bond to the tooth structure, requiring less removal of healthy tissue than silver (amalgam) fillings. They're also more aesthetically pleasing and free of mercury.
Is the procedure painful?+
No. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area before starting. You may feel mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards as the tooth settles, which is entirely normal.
How long do fillings last?+
With good oral hygiene, composite fillings typically last 7-10 years or longer. The lifespan depends on the size and location of the filling and how well you care for your teeth.
Should I replace my old silver fillings?+
Not necessarily, if they're intact and not causing problems, there's no urgent need. If they're cracked, worn or causing sensitivity, replacing them with composite may be a good option.
