Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth with moderate decay or damage. They offer a conservative alternative to full crowns, preserving more of your natural tooth structure while providing excellent durability and aesthetics.
An inlay fills the space within the cusps (bumps) on the chewing surface of a tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps. Both are fabricated outside the mouth and then bonded to the tooth, providing a precise, durable restoration.
Inlays and onlays are ideal when damage is too extensive for a simple filling but not severe enough to require a full crown. They're often used to replace large old fillings, repair cracked teeth, or restore teeth with significant decay.
We typically use tooth-coloured porcelain or composite materials that match your natural teeth. Inlays and onlays are stronger than fillings, preserve more healthy tooth structure than crowns, and provide an excellent seal against bacteria.
Getting an inlay or onlay usually requires two appointments. At the first visit, we prepare the tooth, take impressions, and fit a temporary restoration. Your custom inlay or onlay is then crafted in a dental laboratory and bonded in place at your second appointment.
