Common Dental Problems

Sensitive Teeth Treatment Cambridge

Tooth sensitivity is very common — and very treatable once we identify what's causing it.

Tooth sensitivity is the sharp, sudden discomfort you feel when eating or drinking something hot, cold, sweet or acidic. It's caused by exposed dentine — the inner layer of the tooth — either through enamel wear, gum recession or a damaged tooth. The key is finding out why it's happening, because the treatment varies accordingly.

You might have this if you notice

  • Sharp pain when eating or drinking hot, cold or sweet things
  • Discomfort that is brief but intense, then fades quickly
  • Sensitivity to cold air (breathing in through your mouth)
  • Certain teeth feel sensitive when you brush them

Tooth sensitivity is very common — and very treatable once we identify what's causing it.

Common questions

Why are my teeth suddenly sensitive?+
Sudden sensitivity often indicates a new cavity, a crack, or a worn-down filling. It's worth getting checked promptly rather than waiting to see if it settles.
Do sensitive toothpastes actually work?+
They can help manage symptoms, but they don't address the cause. If sensitivity is persistent, a dental examination is important to rule out decay or structural problems.
Is tooth sensitivity a sign of something serious?+
Not always, but it can be. Sensitivity that is worsening or present on multiple teeth warrants investigation. It's your tooth's way of telling you something has changed.
Will treatment for sensitivity hurt?+
No. Most treatments for sensitivity are straightforward and comfortable. We always use local anaesthetic for any work that might cause discomfort.
