Sensitive teeth are one of the most common dental complaints, but they should never be accepted as normal. Sensitivity is usually a sign that something has changed, whether that is enamel erosion, gum recession, a cracked tooth, or a new cavity. At Form Dental, we identify the exact cause and recommend the most effective treatment, rather than simply masking the symptom.
This treatment is ideal if you
Sensitivity occurs when the inner layer of the tooth, the dentine, becomes exposed. Dentine contains tiny channels that lead to the nerve, and when exposed to temperature, pressure, or sweet and acidic foods, these channels transmit pain. Common causes include enamel erosion from acidic food and drink, gum recession exposing the root surface, teeth grinding, overzealous brushing, cracked or chipped teeth, and decay or failing restorations.
Because sensitivity can have multiple causes, an accurate diagnosis is essential. We will carry out a thorough examination including X-rays where needed, discuss your symptoms and habits, and identify any contributing factors such as diet, brushing technique, or tooth grinding. Understanding the cause allows us to recommend a treatment that actually works rather than a temporary fix.
Depending on the cause, treatment might include desensitising agents applied directly to the teeth, fluoride treatments to strengthen and remineralise enamel, a custom-made night guard if grinding is a factor, or restorative work to address decay, cracks, or worn areas. We will also advise on toothpaste, technique, and dietary changes that can make a significant difference at home.
If you have been ignoring sensitivity, or if a sensitivity toothpaste is no longer keeping it under control, it is worth getting it checked. Sudden or worsening sensitivity can indicate a more serious problem that will only become more complex and more costly the longer it is left. Early intervention is always the better approach.
