Common Dental Problems

Bad Breath Treatment Cambridge

Persistent bad breath almost always has a dental cause — and a straightforward solution.

Occasional bad breath after certain foods is normal. Persistent bad breath — known as halitosis — is a different matter and is almost always caused by a dental or oral health issue rather than diet or digestion. Bacteria on the tongue, around the gumline and in hard-to-reach areas between teeth are the usual culprits. The good news is that once identified, it is very treatable.

You might have this if you notice

  • Unpleasant taste or smell that persists through the day
  • Other people mention your breath or you notice them stepping back
  • Breath that returns quickly after brushing
  • Dry mouth, especially in the morning
  • A white coating on the tongue

Persistent bad breath almost always has a dental cause — and a straightforward solution.

Common questions

What causes persistent bad breath?+
The most common causes are gum disease, tooth decay, a heavily coated tongue, dry mouth, or bacteria building up around old restorations. Diet and digestion are less often the cause than people assume.
Will mouthwash cure bad breath?+
Mouthwash can mask bad breath temporarily, but it does not address the underlying cause. If bad breath persists despite good oral hygiene, a dental check is important.
Is bad breath embarrassing to discuss at the dentist?+
Not at all. We see it regularly and there is no judgement — it is almost always a clinical issue, not a hygiene failing.
How quickly will treatment work?+
Most patients notice a significant improvement after their first professional clean and treatment visit. Long-term control comes from regular hygiene appointments and good home care.
