Bleeding Gums Treatment Cambridge

Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease — which is very treatable when caught early.

Gums should not bleed when you brush or floss. If yours do, it's an early warning sign of gum disease (gingivitis), which, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis — a more serious condition that can lead to bone loss and eventually tooth loss. The good news is that gum disease at early and moderate stages responds very well to professional treatment.

You might have this if you notice

  • Gums bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Gums look red, swollen or puffy rather than pale pink and firm
  • Persistent bad breath that doesn't resolve with brushing
  • Gums that feel tender to touch
  • Teeth that look longer than they used to (gum recession)

Common questions

Is it normal for gums to bleed when I brush?+
No. Healthy gums do not bleed. Regular bleeding is an early sign of gum disease and should be assessed.
Can I fix bleeding gums by brushing more carefully?+
Better brushing and flossing technique will help, but once gum disease has taken hold, professional cleaning is needed to remove the hardened calculus that brushing cannot shift.
Will my gums stop bleeding after a clean?+
For most patients with early gum disease, yes — significantly so within a few weeks of professional treatment combined with good home care.
Can gum disease affect my overall health?+
Yes. Research links gum disease to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes complications and other systemic conditions. Treating it is about much more than your teeth.
