Swollen Gum Treatment Cambridge

A swollen gum is usually telling you something needs attention — we'll find out what and treat it.

Gum swelling can have several causes — from a localised infection or abscess, to gum disease, a food trap or an erupting tooth. It may be accompanied by pain, or you may just notice a puffy area when you look in the mirror. Whatever the cause, it's worth getting it assessed sooner rather than later, as infections in the mouth can spread if untreated.

You might have this if you notice

  • Gum tissue that appears red, puffy or swollen
  • Pain or tenderness when touching the area or eating
  • A visible lump or blister on the gum (may indicate an abscess)
  • Swelling that has come on suddenly
  • Throbbing discomfort in the area

Common questions

Is a swollen gum a dental emergency?+
It depends on severity. A small area of puffiness may not be urgent. A rapidly spreading swelling, difficulty swallowing or a high temperature are emergencies — seek care the same day.
What causes swelling around one tooth?+
Often a dental abscess — an infection at the root tip or in the gum tissue. This is usually treated with drainage, antibiotics and then addressing the source (root canal or extraction).
Will antibiotics fix a swollen gum?+
Antibiotics alone will not cure a dental abscess — they reduce the infection temporarily, but the source must be treated dentally. Never rely on antibiotics as the only treatment.
Can I drain a gum abscess at home?+
No. Attempting to drain an abscess at home risks spreading infection and introduces new bacteria. This must be done properly by a dentist in a clinical setting.
